Webmaster Tips to Boost Sales with Shopping Cart Features PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 21 August 2007
Regardless of how great your products are, or how low your prices, if you don’t have great shopping cart features you will lose customers. The best way to boost sales with an e-commerce website is to make your site easy to navigate. There are a lot of shopping cart features that will make shopping and ordering products easier for your customers, boosting your sales and helping you build your online business. Whatever shopping cart software or service you use, you should make sure that you have at least these usability features in your shopping cart software.

The first way to boost your sales with a shopping cart software is to allow the customer to continue shopping or check out at any time. If it is difficult for your customers to return to shopping when they think of that last minute item after they have started the checkout process, you are going to miss out on a sale, and the customer probably wont’ return. Likewise, if a customer wants to check out but has to go through window after window of “special items” to get there, they may decide that it isn’t worth it and abandon their shopping cart altogether.

Your customers should also be able to easily change, remove, or add items to the shopping cart through quantity and other options. If the customer changes their mind, they will want to be able to change their order easily. If they cannot, they will likely go somewhere else to purchase those items.

Your customers should also be able to see that their items have been added to the shopping cart. This is very important, because customers want to see that the action they took went through. If you don’t have this confirmation, your customers may continue to add items to the cart, then become frustrated when they discover that they ordered not one, but twenty of a particular item.

You should also make sure that your customers can easily find any return policies and privacy policies before making their purchase. If these items are not to be found until after entering the order confirmation, you will be likely to lose customers due to the wariness that online shopping has induced in today’s society.  All information relating to the order should be presented before giving personal information, including shipping charges.

Another way to boost your sales is to avoid making registration with your website necessary. If someone only wants to buy once, or is in a hurry and might return in the future, they probably won’t take the time to fill out registration forms. They want a quick in and out online shopping experience. Allow customers to use your shopping cart without registering.
